I have no idea how the class system works, besides the very basics. Are there any decent guides on it? I'm hoping to be a battle mage, with magic at ranged and sword+shield / mace+shield for close quarters, what would be best for me?

So the "Wizard Knight" would be most like the traditional battle mage?

Basically, except it is a Hybrid DPS class, mixed between Melee/Magic DPS so you'll be doing lower damage than a pure Magic DPS class.

I'm wanting to do good damage at both long and short range. I thought it would be good to use magic at range, and then switch to one handed/shield or two handed.

What about Knight of Honor?

This is my build and sounds like something you're looking for. Mainly a magic damage class but has a couple melee attacks that help support your magic spells but allows you to focus on stacking up your Magic Attack instead of having to mix your stats between Melee and Magic attack.

I think I'd prefer to be a close combat class with magic abilities, not exactly a battle mage, I suppose.

Your best bet with that would probably be a class that has Combat/Necromancy/and either Will or Protection. Check out the class Dark Knight.

Thanks, I appreciate all of the help you've been giving me.
