When would you say a darkrunner has an edge over a plate blighter in a 1v1 scenario?

You should buy it right now to see how you like the game. If you don't know what to spend your labor on, you could just process materials (lumber, stone, iron). They do not reward a lot of gold but...

Wow, its gonna be a challenge.

I think it depends on your class. An epic bow for a primeval might not cut it anymore, however if you are a darkrunner an epic t6 is probably gonna do the job.

If you are gonna be changing between darkrunner and primeval you should use shortspear + dagger.
Divine shortspear and celestial dagger will do its job for a primeval.

However I would recommend...
