AA Christmas Story (or A Winter Maidens Day Tale)

You ride your favorite mount towards a simple gateway maned by a single servant, who's face, upon your arrival brightens considerably. "Oh thank the Winter Maiden! You've come to Winters Day Dinner! She'll be ever so glad!" exclaims the manservant at the gate cheerfully. "The Mistress was unsure if you'd be able to make it this year, due to the conflicts abroad. Do please come in, the stable hand will take care of you steed." The servant quickly escorts you past the gate....and towards the main house.

As you walk closer you notice the beautiful trees and stop to admire them "Aren't they pretty? The Mistress made sure extra care was taken with the Dawnleaf Trees this year. I think they add just a bit of elegance don't you?" Your escort pauses for a second. "I think "HE" would have enjoyed them....." he says softly, a touch of sadness in his voice.

The manservant quickly composes himself and quickly presses you forward "Now please don't dwaddle Sir, Dinner is about to be served!, and the Mistress is greeting her guests at the entry, please do join them."

"Just up these steps my good Sir, your hostess is waiting! Don't mind the Snowmen, they tend to be a bit...frosty to strangers! oh ho ho ho!!" The manservant's attempt at levity causing a wry smile to grace your lips, and with that your escort offers up a short bow as he moves to return to his position at the main gate.

"Oh!! Praise be to Iji! I'm so glad you could make Winters Day Dinner this year! " your hostess criesout happily as she spots you walking up the stairs! "We....I've missed having you to Winters Day Dinner last year." You pretend to not notice the slip, as you greet your old friend, knowing these past few years have not been kind to her, you smile and embrace, offering up a small comfort as you both silently agree to ignore the slip.

"Please head on up and take a seat while I finish welcoming the other guests." She says, as she ushers you up the stairs to the Terrace, where you find a table laden with roast duck and other holiday treats. "We'll visit more during dinner!" She says with a bright smile on her face, and joy in her eyes.

You sit, and the other guest filter in and you greet those you know, and nod in acknowledgment of those you do not. Quickly everyone find their place at the table. She rushes in and promptly sits by your side. She looks around happily and begins her welcome speech/toast.

"Oh my friends! I'm so glad you could make it! This year has been rough on us all, we've had political upheavals and natural disasters galore. We've fought battles at home and abroad. We've seen friends and family torn apart, and then brought back together, we've overcome all the challenges we've faced!" She pauses as a boisterous cheer erupts from the table.

She waits for it to quite down before continuing on

"But let us also remember those still on the battle fronts far from hearth and home.... and those who have fallen, may Nui keep them close" she says the last bit a tad softly with great sadness in her eyes. You see her quickly shake her melancholy off, and lift her glass, you and the other guests follow suit.

"To our Heroes still fighting and those who have fallen! To our Heroes who have returned safe, we give our thanks and to those still abroad, we pray to Akrites for your victory and swift return!" She brings the glass to her lips and drinks heavily. "TO OUR HEROES!" the toast is returned as everyone at the table drinks from their cups!

"Now please...Eat, Drink and be Merry! Let us celebrate the holiday and the coming of a new year!" She exclaims as she waves to the servants waiting to bring out even more dishes, and sits herself down again at your side.

"Now..." she tilts her head your way "tell me what you've been up to since last we spoke."

The hours fly by, full of good food and better conversations as a phonograph plays cheerful holiday music in the background. Before you both knew it, evening was upon you, and it was time for you to go. You wished you could stay longer, but you'd already tarried to long and you were expected back soon.

She walks with you, arm in arm, to the terrace steps and down to the mezzanine, where she had greeted you earlier. "I'll say my farewells here" she says softly "I know you have to return...so I won't ask you to stay longer... I'll just ask you not to take to many risks...." she pauses and looks skyward "not like he did....I couldn't stand to lose you as...." "Stop!" You say quit forcefully as you place your hand gently on hers . You look in her eyes and you only see a grief born of great loss, and worry. Worry for your safety.

"I feel your loss, just as keenly....I lost him too." You say more gently. "we three we're together for what seems forever, We trained, fought battles, rose in the ranks and celebrated our victories together, but in the end we were helpless to stop it, as one of us fell in battle." you pause, then continue, "Though I morn him, I am still a Soldier and will go where I am bid by our King."

You look up at the darkening sky, breath deep and exhale, and look down at her, your comrade in arms, your friend...and maybe someday your.....No, you stop that train of thought swiftly. Although you love her deeply, she is still in morning...but maybe someday you'll come back to finish that thought.

"phbbbt....Soldier indeed!" came her response in a teasingly mocking tone. She looks up at you laughter sparkling in her eyes "Well I'll still ask you at least TRY to stay safe....General!" You quirk your eyebrow at her, in mock arrogance.

Suddenly all humor is gone and she's serious once more, you see the remnants of your former Lieutenant come to bare as she glares up at you "Don't. Take. Unnecessary. Risks! Not like He did!" she tells you, in a tone you a quite familiar with, It brooks no nonsense and no discord.

You close your eyes, and sigh deeply, giving in, if only to give her that comfort. "I'll not take unnecessary risks with either mine or my soldiers lives.....this I vow." Her eyes soften towards you again and she removes her arm from the crook of yours and steps away, separating you from her warmth, and the cool night air begins to chill you. You secure your coat a bit more tightly to stave off the cold.

"Then I bid you good journey, and a safe return." she says as you depart down the rest of the stairs leading towards the main gate.

As you near the gateway, you hear her call out! "General!" You turn and she is still standing on the mezzanine. "FOR LUCK!" she yells out, as she blows you a kiss. You smile as you jokingly grab your chest and stumble as if arrow struck, before righting yourself and giving a cheerful wave good-bye.

This was the custom you three had, She would always "blow a kiss for Luck" when one of them had to go on a separate mission the others weren't assigned to, because as she put it, "you two idiots need all the luck you can muster!"

She waves good-bye and heads back into the house to see to the rest of her guests. The smile then falls from your face as she turns away. "How could you....How could you have done this to her!" you ask 'HIM' under your breath. "I would have given everything....." again you squelch that thought, and turn back to the gateway...your mount awaiting you.

The stable-boy hands you your reigns and you mount up. "sir?" came a timid voice from below. You look down and the stable-boy has his hat in hand, silently asking permission to speak. "Say what you will boy." you tell him "but make it quick I've a long journey ahead!"

The boy looks up at you and speaks quickly. "I's just wanted ta say thank ya for making th' Mistress happy tonight, we's don't see her smile much any more since it happened...so Thank ya!" and with that the boy quickly ran back to the stable to assist with the other mounts that needed attending to.

You start to ride away, but by chance take a look back. You bring your mount to a sudden halt. The view before you simple yet beautiful...just like her. The darkness of the night held off by the golden glow of the Dawnleaf Trees. You smile softly..."Yes 'HE' would have liked them indeed." you say to yourself.

You inhale deeply and exhale long, the cold chilling your breath, you've come to a decision. Should you be blessed by Akrites to see next Winters Day, you'll not hold back any longer. Come what may, you'll make your confession and pray to Hora and Aier that she'll give you a chance, a chance to offer what 'He' no longer could. Love, life & happiness.

"Yes...This I vow, before all the Gods & Goddesses, I'll wait no longer than next Winters Day, then either way I'll have an answer." And with your vow spoken before the gods, you urge your mount forward, and into the inky blackness of the night as you wait til next Winters Day.

Just a quick short story that popped into my head this evening. I know it probably needs some work, grammar wise, but let me know what you think?
