Letter to Trion Worlds about the 2018 Evolution castle compensation package.

I am writing this letter up on behalf of the castle owning guilds of all the legacy servers. When it comes to Archeage and castles, most castle owners at some point in the game have come to me for advice, recently I have been presented with a lot of questions regarding castles and the server evolution. Some of which I asked a previous Live Stream, and Khrolan wanted something written up on the forums about it so that our concerns could be addressed.

One of the biggest aspects of the game is the Castle system. An enormous amount of planning goes into the castle system for every guild that ever wants to have one. The biggest thing for a castle owner and prospective castle owner is the siege it self, one must first win the Siege Scroll to be able to attempt to have a castle, however the planning doesn't just end there or start there necessarily, guilds will spend astronomical amounts of gold for a chance to attack and own their own castle, while guilds that own them will spend for the chance to defend their castle or castles against an onslaught.

Currently the Trion team is planning for Full-Kits for all the castle buildings that each individual castle owner has, Khrolan on the Live Stream said that he thinks it will be the same as what they did last Evolution.

The main point of this letter is to communicate our, the many castle owning guilds, concerns with the actual value of the 2018 server evolution castle compensation. The loss of value is not due to in-game mechanics, an actual siege for example, but due to there simply being far less castles, from 42 down to 12 to be exact, and crazy expensive bound items being stuck on un-usable characters. These groups who have spent large amounts of gold, time, and effort to develop castles on each of the 7 current servers will be unable to benefit from their hard work because of the method this compensation that will be delivered.

The three main concerns of pre-evolution castle owners

    1. Peace Funds

This is the main one that came up, especially since the Oct. 7th sieges have been canceled. Many guilds bid their own castles to defend them from aggressors, get the gold from the peace fund accumulation, and to get the honor rewards.

Also last Evolution Trion said we would get the peace funds paid out, but that never happened, so hopefully this time we can get that to assist with castle claiming on the new servers.

As of typing this Trion hasnít stated whether or not we will be receiving these peace funds, many of us hope to receive the gold this time in order to use it to invest in claiming new castles on the Evolution servers.

    2. Designs

The previous server evolution castle owners received the design, an instant construction material, and the lordís coins to use them. The one catch to the instant make construction material is that you had to be the lead of a castle owners guild which render this compensation worthless to a majority of the guilds receiving the compensation. No larger guild is going to risk letting someone have guild lead of their castle to place and use the compensation so selling them is impossible.

Even if the designs/instant construction material packs could be used without being a castle guild leader, there will be next to no castles looking for designs and or packs based on the amount of castles we are being reduced to compared to what exists today.

There are many problems that we had to work around with the past compensation but the new proposed compensation of Full Kit Buildings vs Design + Mats, is not a better solution. You end up with the same problems where larger more dominate guild leaders will not take the risk to pass their guild lead to place a few buildings they might need to finish a castle.

Our proposed solution is to give out a similar compensation as last time but give the ability to sell the old designs to an NPC, or make them tradable. That way people can keep the instant packs for future castles and recover some much needed inventory space. Handing out full kits would completely fill a players inventory as there are well over 100 buildings needed to run a functioning castle

    3. Lordís Coins Overall

Lordís coins and their uncertainty is something that has everyone worried about. A large majority of castle owners use their lordís coins to do the aurorian packs to help fund the bidding process, once it is gone, the valuation of coins seemingly will be going away rapidly. Only very few items in the game will require lordís in more patches in the future as well. Lordís coins are no longer needed to craft Tier 7 obsidian equipment and even small amounts being removed like requiring Lordís Coins to summon the Thunderwing Titan boss have already been removed from the game.

Sever Evolution Castle Break Down Math

I have broken down a large number of the castle mechanics in the remainder of this letter to explain the amount of gold and time truly being lost in even a few buildings being stuck on one character.

The biggest requirements for a castle are Farms, Walls, Towers, and the Fortress to get the Refuge Level to be able to properly defend it. Higher refuge ranks require more buildings which means even more time and gold potentially stuck on a single character. Then comes the amenities to allow players to be able to work at the castle, and to produce extra income for the castle.

I will start by breaking down the specific cost of each castle piece then work towards the actual castle build cost to be properly managed and be properly defended. This sections purpose is to explain the true time and effort we have all invested in order to get functional castles.

    The Fortress

In mirage you get the design for 1000 gold. Building it requires 3 stone packs, 2 iron packs, and 2 lumber packs. Once this is built and active, you are able to make the Construction Materials to start building your castle. There are three levels to the fortress Tier 1: Two Benches, Tier 2: Three Benches, Tier 3: Four Benches.

From these benches you can create 3 types of packs: Basic (30 per batch), Advanced(3 per batch), Luxury(1 per batch).

Basic Construction Materials - 90 Lord's coins for 30 packs, requires 45 castle workers to do the quest per bench. (breaks down to 3 lordís coins per pack)

Advanced Construction Materials - 90 Lord's coins for 3 packs, requires 45 castle workers to do the quest per bench. (breaks down to 30 Lordís coins per pack)
    Requires a Tier 2 Fortress
Requires a Gatehouse to remove from the workbench

Luxury Construction Materials - 100 Lord's coins per 1 pack, requires 50 castle workers to do the quest per bench. (100 Lordís coins per pack)
    Requires a Tier 3 Fortress
Requires a Gatehouse to remove from the workbench

In order to level up your fortress to be able to make the higher tier packs and to have more benches it requires a substantial investment.

A level 2 Fortress requires 100 Basic packs which breaks down to a total of 300 Lord's coins,

A Level 2 Fortress will let you, make advanced construction materials, and use the warehouses to make additional Lord's coins off of castle marketplace goods.

A level 3 Fortress requires 100 Advanced packs, which breaks down to a total of 3000 Lord's coins.

A level 3 fortress will let you make luxury construction materials, a player nation, Sovereignís Vault (Wyvern Nest), and Diplomacy Headquarters and overall just looks cooler!

As you can see the investment players put into just their Fortress is already massive.

    Farms: Requirements and Uses.

On the smaller castles you can have a total of 35 Buildings: specifically the Marketplace, Warehouses, Diplomacy Building, Wyvern Nest, Workshop, and Farms all count towards this cap and 50 on the two larger ones Sungold and Exeloch. Farms are a two fold thing, one is they are required to be able to defend your castle in a siege. The other is they allow players who have a work permit for the corresponding castle to do quests for making Lord's Coins. Once the farms are placed, you are required to make them Level 3 farms to count for Refuge rank for a siege defense

    Farm Levels and Cost

A level 1 farm costs, 100 gold and 3 basic construction materials to build.

A level 2 farm requires, a level 1 farm, 1 gold hammer, and 1 advance construction pack

A level 3 farm requires, a level 2 farm, 1 gold hammer, and 1 luxury pack.

If you are planning for a defense and for workers you would have probably 30 farms on the smaller and 45 on the bigger, I'll use these numbers for the math.

This puts the total cost in just for the farms, lets math it out

Smaller Castles (Marcala, Calmlands, Heedmar, Nuimari)
    30 farms:
    3000 gold for the designs
30 gold for the gold hammers
    90 basic construction materials
    30 advanced construction materials
    30 luxury construction materials

The lord coins required for each pack group:
    270 for the basic materials
    900 for the advanced materials
    3000 for the luxury materials

Grand total of 3300 Lord's coins for a small castleís farms

    Larger Castle (sungold, Exeloch)
    45 farms:
    4500 gold for the designs
45 gold for the gold hammers
135 basic construction materials (Must make 150 basic construction materials)
    45 advanced construction materials
    45 luxury construction materials

The Lordís coins cost for each pack group:
    450 for the basic materials
    1350 for the advanced materials
    4500 for the luxury materials

Grand total of 6300 Lordís coins for a large castleís farms

Keep in mind, you have to make them in the materials groups, 90 coins for 30 basic
You will need to do 5 sets of basic construction materials, this will leave you with 15 leftover basic construction packs, which we will use for the gatehouse later on.

    The Gatehouse Bottleneck

Each castle is required to have a built Gatehouse in order to remove the Advanced and Luxury construction materials from the benches.

The smaller castles can have One Gatehouse, while the larger castles can have Two Gatehouses

Nuian Gatehouse Design 240 gold, 8 basic construction materials (24 Lord's coins)

Harani Gatehouse Design 240 gold, 8 basic construction materials (24 Lord's coins)

One of the biggest questions and actually very missable factors in the castles is that in small print on the Advanced and Luxury construction material tool-tip at the bench, is that you need a gate house to remove them from the benches. This is one of the two uses for a gatehouse.

In our simple castle design for this document, the Smaller castles will be required to spend additional Lordís Coins to acquire more basic construction materials for the gatehouse, whereas the larger design has leftover basic materials and will be able to allocate them to the gatehouse.

Once you place and build your gatehouse your able to then remove the advanced packs and continue upgrading your fortress, or your farms.

The other use of a gatehouse is to allow castle workers to get access to your farms which would presumably be hidden behind some walls. One thing to take note of is that the gatehouse automatically closes itself on server restarts.

It is automatically set to guild, all guild members can open and close, but for best use and easy access it should be set for public use so as all your little worker dwarfs can do their work on the farms.

Using our simple castle design, at this point the small castle has no leftover basic construction materials, and thus will be required to do another set to get the 8 basic to build the gatehouse. The larger design however has leftover materials and will be able to allocate them to the gatehouse.

Walls, Towers, and Simple Defense Castles

The smaller castles can have up to fifty walls or towers arranged within the zone, while the two larger ones can have one hundred total.

The towers and walls come in Nuian or Haranian designs, the cost and function are the same while only the appearance is different.

Nuian Defense Tower Design 210 gold, 7 basic construction materials (21 Lord's Coins)

Nuian Tower Design 150 gold, 5 basic construction materials (15 Lord's Coins)

Nuian Wall Design 90 gold, 3 basic construction materials (9 Lord's Coins)

Harani Defense Tower Design 210 gold, 7 basic construction materials (21 Lord' Coins)

Harni Tower Design 150 gold, 5 basic construction materials (15 Lord's Coins)

Harani Wall Design* 90 gold, 3 basic construction materials (9 Lord's Coins)

An average castle will be split between walls and towers for a proper defence, the cost is kind of hard to nail down so we will do a simple 30 walls, 10 defense tower, 10 tower design and 1 gatehouse for a smaller castle, and 60 wall, 20 defence 20 tower, and 2 gatehouse design for the larger castle.

Here is the numbers for just the cost of walls
Smaller Castle (Marcala, Calmlands, Heedmar, Nuimari)
    30 walls requires
    2700 gold
    90 basic construction materials (270 Lord's coins)

    10 defense towers requires
    2100 gold
    70 basic construction materials (210 Lord's coins)

    10 towers requires
    1500 gold
    50 basic packs (150 Lord's coins)
So a simple smaller castle design will cost: 6300 gold, and 630 Lord's coins!

Keep in mind, you have to make them in the materials groups, 90 coins for 30 basic

Total basic packs needed = 210 basic packs This will require 7 sets of basic construction materials.

    Larger Castle (Sungold, Exeloch)
    60 walls requires,
    5400 gold
    180 basic construction materials (540 Lord's coins)

    20 defense towers requires
    4200 gold
    140 basic construction materials (420 Lord's coins)

    20 towers requires
    3000 gold
    100 basic packs (300 Lord's coins)

So a simple large castle design will cost: 12600 gold, and 1260 Lordís coins!

Keep in mind, you have to make them in the materials groups, 90 coins for 30 basic

Total basic packs needed = 420 basic packs This will require 14 sets of basic construction materials.

KEEP IN MIND! These simple castles are only showing you the prices for minimum defense against a group that is theoretically able to take your castle. Meaning this would be the castleís refuge would be high enough to keep a solo archer from sneaking off and destroying the lodestone by himself. These are not functional castles in the slightest. However they can still look pretty.

    Functional Castles

Next comes the amenities, that allow for castle workers, and for making additional income from the castles or just design aspects. While these building wonít help you defend your castle during pvp, you could become a source of income for the players of your server and have a sort of protection by

Territory Market Design 900 gold, 30 basic construction materials (90 Lord's coins)
Requires A Tier 1 Fortress to be able to remove the marketplace goods from the 3 benches!

Territory Warehouse Design 900 gold, 3 advanced construction materials (90 Lord's coins)
Requires A Tier 2 Fortress to be able to put the marketplace goods into the warehouse!

Territory Workshop Design 10,000 gold, 33 advanced construction materials (990 Lord's coins)
Requires a Tier 2 Fortress in order to make advanced packs

    Sovereign's Vault Design 20,000 gold, 20 luxury construction materials (2000 Lord's coins)
Requires a Tier 3 Fortress in order to make luxury packs

Diplomacy Headquarters Design 10,000 gold, 33 advanced construction materials (990 Lord's coins)
Requires a Tier 3 Fortress in order to make luxury packs

Wooden Rampart Stairs Design 30 gold, 1 basic construction materials (1 Lord's Coin)
Wooden staircase that can attach to walls to help those that canít glide

Functional castles will need one Marketplace, and at least 3 warehouses, the marketplace allows the players to take quest from the farms to receive lordís pents and lordís coins, and allows the castle to generate territory goods packs which will provide 1 lord coin per pack to the same zones warehouse or 1.5 lord's coin per pack to a different zone, the warehouses can only hold 30 packs at a time, and take a lot of time to operate, and can be stole by the enemy.

A territory workshop allows you to make Regal Ore, which is 10 lord's coins per stack of 10 regal ore, this lets you craft the specialty armor and small wyvern armor.

Sovereign's Vault will let you make a Big Wyvern, and small Wyverns
Requires player nation. The mounts can also only be used by the nation leader and nation members respectively.

Diplomacy Headquarters will let you make a week long alliance with one of the main factions (Haranya or Nuia).
    Requires player nation

Based on all of the information gathered here and conversations I have had with other castle owners, we hope that the castle compensation has a serious re-evaluation. With the way it stands now many of the Full Kits will only rot on old castle owner accounts and all of the time and effort those guilds have put into developing castles.

Overall, the compensation as a whole needs a more indepth look and some reworking to make it more reasonable to the actual valuation of the castles, and what many castle owners expect to be a full loss as they will not be able to compete for them with the reduction down to twelve castles, additionally it would be helpful if the team was able to work out the means of giving out the peace funds as well.

It would be better to have a similar compensation as last time versus a Full-Kit, but it needs some reworking as well, just because the game as a whole is losing 30 castles. Again I cannot stress this enough that there is NO castle owner that will give lead of that guild to someone else to place down designs and build them. The prospects of selling your stuff on merge are not just close to but are at a Zero Percent chance.

One of the other issues with the castles is the Peace Funds, last evolution Trion said that all the castles would receive peace fund compensation as well, however, they did not fulfill that and did not give out any peace fund compensation to the castle owners. It would be helpful if the Trion team could look into this again, as they have already decided to cancel the final siege cycle before the evolution,so the peace funds are not able to be claimed.

The biggest things that came up in my talks with other castle owners is the concern that the smaller ones will not be able to claim a castle at all on the castle rush, and then not being able to outbid the bigger guilds to start a siege. After that even if they out bid them, the likelihood of taking a defended castle is very low for the smaller owners, compared to the larger more geared and pvp focused castle owners. So having Full-Kits and stuff locked to being a castle owning guild leader to use basically means that nothing is gotten out of losing the castles that they worked for and maintained, they are not losing the castles to real fights but to the Server Evolutions.

Ultimately the compensation and reimbursements are at the will of Trion and XL, however the castle owners need something that is tangible for them given the environment that is going to be created, Seven servers becoming Two. The majority of players that stay on legacy stayed because they did not want to lose what they spent years creating. The evolution is going to hit the player base hard, but with castles being a core mechanic within the game we feel that the compensation should represent the time we have put into it.

Hopefully Khrolan sees this and can give some more information and insight into this issue, as it is an end game content level and one of the highest levels of events in Archeage.
